Start Date-End Date: 09/07/2022-09/07/2022 Land Manager Office: High Plains Environmental Center Land Manager Contact: Jack Van Vleet Funding Partner: Programmatic Partner: Summary: Get your hands dirty at this Wednesday planting and weeding project! Description: Project photo by Sue Daniels Photography Where You'll Be: The High Plains Environmental Center (HPEC) in Loveland features 2 lakes, 76 acres, and 3 miles of trail that are open to the public year-round. The urban park is designed to demonstrate how natural places can be preserved in the midst of development through sustainable planning, and to educate communities about the value of land stewardship, native plants, and wildlife habitat. VOC has partnered with HPEC since 2009 and our volunteers have been instrumental in developing the site's many gardens and exhibits. What You'll Do: On this volunteer project, you'll spend the day helping to weed and plant shrubs on the north end of Houts Lake. This is a great way to get outside, explore natural areas close to the city, and make an immediate, positive impact on nature. Why It Matters: With a small staff, volunteer projects like this one are instrumental to the development, maintenance, and ongoing support of HPEC and it's programs. HPEC had purchased shrubs for this project so VOC rescheduled the event and opened to the public to get the shrubs planted. The link to the new event was shared with Corporate groups and Board members to help us spread the word. Initially, we only received 6 registrations and VOC staff were invited to participate. We had a staff meeting schedule for that day and it was moved to a different date to give staff the opportunity to volunteer in this project. We had 5 VOC staff volunteering which gave us enough volunteers to have the project. Volunteers worked in 2 different areas planting shrubs to act as a barrier to keep hikers and users on trail. With 13 volunteers we were able to finish this project in 3.5 hours.
