Where You'll Be:
Chautauqua Park is a National Historic Landmark and iconic to the City of Boulder. The area is host to some of the most beautiful scenery in Colorado with the famous Flatirons as its backdrop. Nestled in the meadow is the Ski Jump Trail, which provides loop opportunities for visitors all within minutes of their vehicle. The trail provides fantastic views of the city, the University of Colorado campus, and the iconic Flatirons.
What You'll Do:
Join us in beautiful Boulder to help reroute the Ski Jump Trail! On this Thursday project, you'll work with up to 60 volunteers to break ground on a new, more sustainable route for this popular trail.
Why It Matters:
The Ski Jump Trail currently follows a steep route and is continually impacted by severe erosion. This, combined with increases in visitation over the last decade, have taken a toll on the trail. By helping to reroute the trail, you will help create a safer and more sustainable experience for all.
About Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado (VOC)
Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado (VOC) is the state's oldest, largest, and leading outdoor stewardship nonprofit organization. Founded in 1984 to motivate and enable people to become active stewards of Colorado's natural resources, VOC has engaged nearly 128,000 people in more than 1,000 volunteer projects for a donated labor value of $26 million. Through award-winning youth and volunteer programs, leadership training, capacity-building programs, and collaborative efforts with nonprofits and land management agencies, VOC is an invaluable resource in Colorado, especially as our outdoor stewardship needs are approaching near-crisis levels. Project Summary: More than 30 cancellations plus unfilled group registration spots that we failed to fill from the waitlist made for a much smaller project than originally anticipated. While it was a bit of a shock to end up with only 27 (when our desired number was 50), it ended up being the perfect size. Even with splitting people into 4 separate crews, we were still a bit crunched for space on the section of trail we were cutting. There was plenty of work to be done! Volunteers worked on basic bench cut trail construction and successfully roughed in about 700 feet of new trail before lunch. After lunch, we returned for an hour to the trail construction but then shifted gears to help move reserved duff and soil up to the trail slated for closure. Volunteers formed a fire line and passed buckets of material up the hill for the final two hours of the day. It was strenuous and a bit tedious, but everyone kept a great attitude and the jokes were flowing!
Successes and Challenges: All in all a successful project, but the one shortcoming was not bringing a cold drink for everyone to enjoy after the work day. Could have picked up a bag of ice and made some lemonade or brought a cooler of La Croix and it would have gone a long way!
