Description

Start Date-End Date: 09/13/2022-09/13/2022 Land Manager Office: City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks Land Manager Contact: Beau Clark Funding Partner: Programmatic Partner: Summary: Help close unsustainable "social trails" at the base of the Flatirons on this Tuesday project. Description: Please note: this project was formerly scheduled to include work on the Skunk Canyon Trail, but has since shifted. For an updated scope of work, please see below. Where You'll Be: The Flatirons are the iconic backdrop to Boulder, a town known for nearby recreation opportunities, a charming downtown, and the University of Colorado. On this project, you'll be working in an area of the Flatirons known as the Shanahan complex. This is a beautiful forested area at the base of the Flatirons that is just a short hike from the Western neighborhoods of Boulder. What You'll Do: Spend your Tuesday at the base of the beautiful Flatirons as you work with approximately 50 volunteers to close several undesignated "social trails". You'll start by decompacting the soil and finish by loosely placing sticks, rocks, and grasses to hide the former route. Anyone that attends a VOC volunteer opportunity in August, September, and October will be entered in a drawing for the chance to win a $300 SCHEELS Gift Card. The more opportunities you attend, the more entries you will earn. Good luck! Why It Matters: Social trails are created by people wandering off the designated trail. These paths destroy sensitive vegetation, disrupt wildlife habitats, and can lead visitors into dangerous and unmarked areas. By closing these trails, you will help restore the natural environment and create a safer experience for the area's many visitors. About Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado (VOC) Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado (VOC) is the state's oldest, largest, and leading outdoor stewardship nonprofit organization. Founded in 1984 to motivate and enable people to become active stewards of Colorado's natural resources, VOC has engaged nearly 128,000 people in more than 1,000 volunteer projects for a donated labor value of $26 million. Through award-winning youth and volunteer programs, leadership training, capacity-building programs, and collaborative efforts with nonprofits and land management agencies, VOC is an invaluable resource in Colorado, especially as our outdoor stewardship needs are approaching near-crisis levels.
