Start Date-End Date: 02/25/2023-02/25/2023 Land Manager Office: City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks Land Manager Contact: Funding Partner: Programmatic Partner: Summary: Youth from LHOC, Greenway Foundation, Volunteers for Outdoors Colorado and Wildland Restoration Volunteers, ages 14-18, will have the opportunity to experience winter activities in Boulder County Parks and Open Space. Description: The propose is to challenge participants to learn survival and outdoor safety skills, then participate in a naturalist-led snowshoe hike to see the wild beauty of the Caribou Ranch in winter. The three (3) hands-on skills stations will be led by Rangers, Deputies, Nederland Fire Department and Cottonwood Institute. Youth will have the option to warm up by the fire and enjoy instant cup noodles (we will have a vegan option), a cup of warm tea or hot chocolate during lunch Latitude/Longitude: 39.9796032, -105.525526 Additional Information: Camping Available: No Physical Difficulty: Moderate High Altitude Project: No Desired Number of Volunteers: 25 Total Adult Volunteers Attended: 15 Total Youth Volunteers Attended: 0 Total Volunteer Days: 15 Total Unique Volunteers: 15 Total Volunteer Hours: 106.5 Staff Hours: 0 Stipend Hours: 0 Project Summary: This event was coordinated by Left-Hand Outdoor Challenge staff. We had 13 students, 2 mentors and 3 staff participating in this event. Students had the opportunity to visit 3 stations: 1) Winter Travel. 2) Cold-related illness. 3)Snow Shelter. Successes and Challenges: Sucesses: VOC staff rented an 8-passenger AWD van with winter tires to drive students to Caribou Ranch. Snowshoes and poles were rented from REI Denver. Board member (Jon Frankel) helped coordinating the rental and waiving the fee. We had 4 adults participating which allowed for 2 vehicles available to drive students Challenges: Not all students RSPV prior to event and had difficultity finding the event site.
