Project Summary: 12 people attended and stayed the entire 3 hours, including 2 youth. Linda with Grow Local was great about educating others about gardening and what they can do for their own garden. She also was great about making sure we were taking group breaks in the shade as it was very hot & sunny this day. The group weeded 3 garden beds for most of the time. Then Linda led them in planting some seeds and then harvested lots of swiss chard, collared greens, and herbs from 2 other beds.
Successes and Challenges: Sucesses: Everyone was a good sport about the heat and staying for the entire time frame. We had a couple long-time volunteers talking about their gardening, along with some first time volunteers as well. Linda is so knowledgeable and does a great job about talking about impact. Civic Center Conservancy's SPARKLES volunteer program were also out there weeding the flower beds, which I think helped with morale a little bit knowing that we weren't the only ones working in the heat. One volunteer joined Linda and I in going to Metro Caring food bank where we put the harvest directly out on the shopping floor and she gave us a quick tour.
Challenges: This was a last-minute addition public project so getting a lot of attendance was hard. Many people cancelled the day before/ morning of because of the heat. The exhaustion from the heat and the fact that most people were bound to their parking meter time I think discouraged them from sticking around for long to donate/talk about other VOC programs/ go to check out the food bank afterwards.
Lessons Learned: Remember to bring a water cooler jug w/ ice as the bathrooms are a bit of walk away for the water.
Staff member should give a shout out almost 2 hours in to remind folks to fill the parking meter if they were using them.
