Project Summary: On Tuesday, May 30th, VOC volunteers met at Harvard Gulch Park to help Grow Local Colorado plant seeds and seedlings for the 2023 growing season. In addition to our volunteers, we had approximately 5 Colorado State University (CSU) Master Gardeners and apprentices help out by arriving early to weed and prepare the placement of the seedlings.
Successes and Challenges: Successes:Our group finished planting within the 2.5 hour timeframe, with some extra time to spare where we spent time admiring our work, taking group photos, and socializing. Both volunteers and CSU Master gardeners and apprentices stayed to help load things into Barbara's truck and the VOC truck.
Challenges: We had 3 volunteers who were no-shows, as well as some late cancellations over the holiday weekend, which resulted in less of a community-feel to the volunteer event, since there weren't many VOC volunteers present. Since the project was scheduled for early the morning after the holiday weekend, I didn't have the chance to check cancellations and manually shift anyone over from the waitlist in time for the project.
Lessons Learned: Consider scheduling this project at least 1 day after the return from Memorial Day weekend in order to have a smaller no-show and cancellation rate (or at least the extra time will allow Project Managers to fill in from the waitlist).
