Start Date-End Date: 10/05/2023-10/05/2023 Land Manager Office: Land Manager Contact: Funding Partner: Programmatic Partner: Summary: Looking for an easy way to get outside and give back to your community? Look no further! Through our long-standing partnership with Grow Local Colorado, volunteers ages 8+ will spend the morning harvesting a vegetable garden and prepping it for winter at Christ the King Church. All harvest from this garden supports Metro Caring and SAME Cafe. Description: VOC is excited to team up with our long-term partner, Grow Local Colorado, to harvest vegetable gardens that demonstrate the beauty of edible gardens, engage community participation, and inspire Denver residents to grow their own vegetable gardens. Tasks will involve harvesting vegetables, weeding, and raking the soil. Depending on what is available to harvest the day of the project, there may be the opportunity for volunteers to join VOC and/or Grow Local staff in a trip to a local food bank to drop off the freshly-harvested produce. Volunteers assumed tasks of either harvesting, cutting up the harvested plant, or bagging the plant once it was cut up to take for compost. Barbara, Linda, or the woman who works at the church were leading volunteers in tasks. Everyone worked fast and seemed to enjoy the work! Aimee went with a volunteer and the woman who works at the church to donate the food after the event. Successes and Challenges: Successes: -People were ready to work right away. And looking for more tasks when each stage was done. -We had a few local participants from that neighborhood! -268 pounds of food were donated! (This garden's largest donation this year) Challenges: -Because a lot of people arrived early, and I was also waiting for some folks who were a few minutes late, I wasn't able to do a formal "Welcome Talk" orienting people to VOC. Barbara gave some of our early participants some tasks to do 'while we were waiting' but it just turned into people starting work and Barbara giving a short introduction to the garden space. -Some folks didn't have enough instruction so some of the squash was pulled that the church actually wanted to stay for a bit longer. Lessons Learned: -For any GrowLocals events here, adding in pre-project communications that the garden is at the back of the church might help. A couple of volunteers were confused. -Coordinate with Barbara about gathering everyone for a formal 'Welcome Talk' so everyone is oriented and knows what's going on. Special Notes: Stewardship Education: Key Concerns or Comments from Staff or Volunteers: Description of Accidents/Incidents: Description of Work Completed: -268 pounds of food were donated!
