The campground was reserved for the VOC project. There are 8 sites but plenty of room, volunteers should expect to share campsites with other volunteers. Car and tent camping available, if you are planning on driving a larger vehicle such as a camper, please coordinate with me directly to see if we can accommodate. There is no water at the campground, but I will have a 200-gallon water tank on site with plenty of water to refill bottles. Vault toilets are available at the campground but not at the work site.
WORK LOCATION:
38.00644, -106.51833 upper and lower logging road split point.
We were only able to work the lower logging road this year, unusual early season moisture resulted in a HUGE amount of tiny rosettes which took much longer to thoroughly remove from the lower road. We covered about 10-20 acres less than in previous years but definitely removed more plants over all. We did have time to take a look at the upper road we worked last year and it looked really good! There is another road that shoots off of the lower road which should be the main focus next year, very dense coverage on that road.
Successes and Challenges: Successes:
- Appeals to a unique type of volunteer, have many new VOC volunteers (or returning who have only attended this project)
-Land manager, Dave T, very engaged with volunteers and great to work with, also had 2 USFS staff join which was great to have additional support. Volunteers reallyappreciateworking with land managers on site.
-Had more registrations than any previous but no shows left us about where we have been. Project would really benefits from increase #s- goal is a minimum of 30 but could accommodatemore.
Challenges:
-Recruitment, we could use more people. Sending early registration to past Moon Pass volunteers was successful
-Would be nice to camp closer to the work but its very expensive to find someone willing to drop a porto up there so we stuck with Poso
Lessons Learned: We tried splitting groups for the first day but with how slow we were moving due to the large amount of tiny rosettes, it was better to work as one large group for team morale.
Special Notes: Campsite #1 is best for the kitchen/registration. Keep an eye on the requests for campers/RV/large vehicles, could fill up quick with many, its a small CG
Stewardship Education: Invasives
