It was a weekend long project and the volunteers all got along well. We worked with the BLM office in Gunnison and had 4 crew members from the BLM help lead the work. We had 35 volunteers total and split volunteers into 4 crews. The hike in was different for each group, some hiked 4 miles and others hiked about a mile and a half. Over two days of work volunteers constructed 19 timber check steps and maintained over 1.5 miles of trail. Successes and Challenges: Successes - we were able to accomplish all of the tasks that the BLM was hoping to complete. Challenges - For some folks, the hike was fairly difficult. During the site visit, we had to turn around due to snow and therefor we weren't sure exactly how far the hike would be for the group at the end of the trail The tool truck had engine problems and the tool manager had to pull over and wait for the project manager. The service at the campsite was non-existent, so coordinating that on Friday evening was a bit of a challenge. Lessons Learned: Communication with volunteers about the length of the hike so they know ahead of time, due to the snow we were unable to hike up to each work site during the one month site visit. In the fall/winter when we do our initial site visit/walkthrough during project applications, note how far the hike is and maybe put it in the project description in the future so volunteers can see it when they sign up.
