Project Summary: On Friday, June 2nd, volunteers met in Johnstown at the Griffith's Solar Garden Plot to stage 2,500 native plant species along the Western and Southern Perimeter of the site. This project was originally planned to happen in mid-may, but we had to reschedule due to weather. The crews split into two groups that each staged one side of the site. The plants were staged in seasonal groups, Spring, spring/summer, summer, and fall. Outreach for this event was successful and we were able to get all of the plants staged along with a few plants in the ground.
Successes and Challenges: Successes - with this being a re-schedule, we still had fairly good numbers because of the Outreach that was done for the event. We managed to get all of the plants staged along each side of the solar field along with several plots planted.
Challenges - There was quite a bit of rainfall in the afternoon, thankfully everyone brought a rain jacket and no one was uncomfortable. Another challenge was that it was difficult for the volunteers to understand the plant placement cards, a more simplified version of the cards would be good for future projects like this.
Lessons Learned: Make sure to always have a weather back up plan, that there is a location where the volunteers can wait out the rain that isn't their vehicles.
Making the planting cards slightly more simple so everyone can understand what goes where
Staging the plants by species and then by season to be sure that the volunteers know where to find each plant (maybe do this the day before)
