We started having around a cancellation every other day during the week leading up to the project. 3) My tool van driver got hurt and had to cancel two days prior. That put even further tasks on my crew chefs to take on. They were already stressed and this kind of put it over the edge of tolerable stress. It also meant I could not take the water buffalo, furthering adding jobs to get done (filtering water) aside from the actual trail work. 4) One of my crew leaders cancelled the day before. This left one of my crew chefs again with another duty to help fill. Overall, the numbers dropped so low and the logistical work got dumped on me and two other volunteers. We felt volunteers would not be able to truly enjoy the experience and the work would not get done to the expectations of the land manager. Successes and Challenges: challenge after challenge, refer to above success was the right call was made and the land manager was not upset Lessons Learned: Secure a crew chef LONG BEFORE the project. Preferably during the volunteer leadership meeting in late winter. Attrition was such an issue for this project so some sort of commitment reinforcement would be nice. Though part of the problem was people were getting injured and that is why they canceled.
